Project Tsuruoka

Project Tsuruoka is a 50 MW grid-scale battery energy storage project in Yamagata Prefecture, connecting to the Tohoku Electric Power Network
Location:Tsuruoka City, Yamagata
Capacity :50 MW
Operating life :~20 years
Technology :Lithium-Ion Battery
Status : Under Development
COD:Target Q2 2030

Overview

Project Tsuruoka is a 50 MW utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) under development in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. Located within the Tohoku electricity network, the project is well positioned to capture value as transmission links between Tohoku and Tokyo expand and renewable generation across the region continues to grow. Beyond energy arbitrage, Project Tsuruoka will strengthen grid reliability by providing flexibility through Japan's balancing and capacity markets, supporting the integration of an increasingly renewable power system.

Development

Brawn Energy acquired Project Tsuruoka during its early development phase and has since advanced key technical and commercial workstreams. The project has already secured grid connection capacity with Tohoku Electric Power Network Co., Inc., a key milestone that de-risks the project's path to construction. Environmental, engineering and permitting activities are progressing in parallel, and the project team is now advancing procurement, detailed design and construction planning to keep the project on track for its targeted commercial operation date.

Community Engagement

Brawn Energy is committed to developing Project Tsuruoka in close partnership with the local community. Engagement with municipal authorities, regional stakeholders and residents will continue throughout the development process to ensure transparent communication and provide opportunities to address questions as the project progresses.
