Construction Manager
Location: Japan
Salary: 9 to 12 MJPY, based on experience
About the Role
The Construction Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing EHV battery energy storage (BESS) construction projects from inception to completion. This role ensures that projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with local regulation, safety and quality standards. The Construction Manager will coordinate activities across multiple departments, supervise contractors, and liaise with clients and engineers to ensure smooth project execution.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning and Scheduling
- Develop detailed project plans, including timelines, resource allocation, and budgeting.
- Coordinate with engineers and contractors to define project scope and specifications.
- Create and manage project schedules, ensuring milestones are met and deadlines are adhered to.
Budgeting and Cost Control
- Prepare and manage project budgets, ensuring costs are controlled and any changes are documented and approved.
- Monitor and report on financial performance of projects, ensuring that resources are utilized efficiently.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and manage procurement of materials and services.
Safety Management
- Enforce safety standards and protocols on the job site to minimize accidents and injuries.
- Conduct regular safety meetings, ensuring compliance with local safety regulations.
- Perform site inspections to identify and address potential hazards.
Quality Control and Compliance
- Ensure all construction activities meet or exceed project specifications and quality standards.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to verify construction work is progressing according to plan.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant Japanese laws, regulations, and construction codes.
Client and Stakeholder Communication
- Serve as the main point of contact between the client, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Provide regular updates on project status, including any potential delays, issues, or changes to scope.
- Address and resolve client concerns, ensuring client satisfaction and maintaining positive relationships.
Risk Management
- Identify potential risks to project timelines, budgets, and overall success, and develop mitigation strategies.
- Document all risks and issues, ensuring proper management and resolution throughout the project lifecycle.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and detailed project documentation, including contracts, change orders, daily logs, and inspection reports.
- Prepare regular progress reports for upper management, clients, and other stakeholders.
Post-Construction
- Ensure all project deliverables are completed, including final inspections and documentation.
- Oversee the handover process to the client, ensuring all punch list items are addressed and completed.
- Conduct post-construction reviews to identify lessons learned and areas for improvement.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or related field (preferred).
- Proven experience (5+ years) as a Construction Manager or similar role in the renewable industry in Japan.
- 5+ years of experience in solar, wind, or biomass projects.
- Native-level Japanese proficiency is necessary, English business level proficiency an advantage.
- Strong knowledge of construction processes, project management, budgeting, and scheduling.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications.
- Proficiency in project management software (e.g. MS Project or similar tools).
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- In-depth understanding of safety regulations and Japanese construction codes.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
Preferred Certifications
- First Class Construction Management Japanese License
- Construction Safety Certification
- Project Management Professional (PMP)
