Manager, Origination & Development

Reports To: Head of Origination & Development

About the Role

Goal is to support the origination & development team to acquire, develop and manage the renewable energy projects to volume up and accelerate Brawn Energy’s # of MW from technical aspects to establishing / implementing the structure and process. As an analyst, you will play a vital role in assessing, analysing, and providing valuable insights on renewable energy projects and initiatives. Your expertise will contribute to the development and implementation of sustainable and clean energy solutions. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to evaluate various renewable energy projects, mainly in solar and battery storage technologies, market trends, financial viability, and environmental impact. Project opportunities include FIT, Non-FIT, Virtual and Physical PPA opportunities for battery storage (BESS) projects. Your activities will be directly contributing to increase the project pipeline and building more projects and contribute to the growth of the renewable energy sector.

Key Responsibilities

Acquisition / Development Phase

Management of Project Introduction/List

  • Engagement with local developers, real estate brokers, landowners to gather land and project information for potential projects.
  • Explain about Brawn Energy and its initiatives to project introducers and landowners.
  • Manage pipeline list and update its status to follow up on project origination opportunities.
  • Report pipeline and projects status to Head of Originations & Development and other key senior leadership.

Project Assessment

  • Conduct assessment for viability of projects through analysis of project from various angles, such as landscape, grid capacity availability, permits, other local requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal/external technical resources to assess the technical feasibility and economic viability of renewable energy projects, considering factors like resource availability, site suitability, and project lifecycle.
  • Conduct financial model assessment to confirm viability of projects.
  • Collaborate with HQ Investment Management team to check project assumptions and model.
  • Conduct site visits to confirm any risk on site.
  • Visit local authority and local communities and necessary local stakeholders to confirm and negotiate on items that affects project risk and opportunities.

Project / Land Negotiation and Contracting with Parties

  • Negotiate with landowners/project owners on land price and other terms and conditions of the project / land purchase contract.

Submission of Applications of Permits, Utility, METI

  • In case green field assets, or change required, submit necessary applications to local authorities, utility company, METI as required to develop the projects (including interconnection study applications to utilities).
  • Collaborate with internal and external resources to prepare documents and drawings required for the necessary applications.
  • Follow up with counterparts on status of permits and other matters necessary for project development.

Investment Committee Approval Support

  • Prepare presentations, financial models and other necessary documents for presenting project acquisition to the investment committee.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, such as Investment Management team, EPC team, legal team and others to prepare documents and confirm assumptions such as project timeline and budget for the investment committee.

Construction Phase / Execution Phase

Transaction Execution

  • Execute the project purchase / land contract to originate a project.
  • Manage contract signing and payments for the transaction.
  • Make necessary application required upon purchase to the local authorities.
  • Collaborate with the relevant risk management points including technical team, legal and investment management team if any deviation from the approval and deal change.

Project Development

  • Manage the development to bring the project to ready to build, or commercial operation status and make sure to manage the risks and report to head of Origination & Development.
  • Make necessary permit application, obtain consent from local communities.
  • Manage the developer partner in need.

Operational Phase

  • Communicate with landowners or required stakeholders to support the transaction restructuring, ownership transfer and administrative actions post commercial operation.
  • Communicate with O&M companies and make a right escalation to HQ or right parties to resolve.

Reporting / Others / Regular Activities

  • Create process creation for other teammates to operate.
  • Act on creating the new scheme for the assets like Non-FIT – VPPA, PPA assets.
  • Report/communicate overall status to the teammates and head of origination & acquisition.
  • Suggest improvement points to make the acquisition approval/decisions making faster.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience of 3+ yrs in business development and/or project development for utility scale renewable power plants in Japan is preferable.
  • Experience of 3+ yrs at real estate company, negotiating land purchase or land lease is a plus.
  • Background from power retail/wholesale/trading business is a plus.
  • Deep understanding of Japanese policy/regulation/laws and market dynamics related to renewables as a foundation of business strategy.
  • Bachelor’s/ Master’s in Engineering, Environmental Science, Economics, or a related field. A focus on renewable energy is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy technologies, including solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, and biomass is a plus.
  • Proficiency in data collection, statistical analysis, and modelling techniques is a plus.
  • Knowledge of energy market dynamics, policies, and regulations related to renewable energy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present findings and recommendations to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools and software applications (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Ability to work with different background to achieve the goal with clear next actions.
  • Ability to structure unstructured problems.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects.
  • Based in Japan, some domestic travel required.
  • Proficient in Japanese / Fluency in English is preferred.
